The field of medicine is associated with the cure of various ailments. One has to take advice from a doctor, let it be cough or cold, or fever or a headache. This is a primitive profession. People use to cure diseases through leaves and herbs. With the passage of time, these herbal medicines were replaced by chemically formulated medicines. Likewise, new ways of treating diseases were invented, which also led to the initiation of surgeries. In this field, Socrates is called the Father of Medicine, and Avicenna is known as the King of all Medical Experts. This field not only cures illnesses, but it also involves public health, prevention from diseases, surgery etc. At present, 36 institutions are imparting education of medicine in Pakistan, out of which 22 are owned by government, whereas, the rest 14 are operated by the private sector. According to the Sind Medical and Dental Council (SMDC), the figure of MBBS graduates/ General Practitioners (GPs) by January 1, 2004, was 90,365, out of which 34,178 are females. Specialists in various disciplines sum up to 15,959, which include 3,127 females.

The area of medicine is expanding so drastically, that it is difficult to elucidate this field, in a few words. After doing MBBS, one can specialize in any particular area- paediatrics, gynaecology, ENT, cardiology, neurology etc. In our country, there are many resources to acquire advance education, and 10 public institutions are offering post graduate studies. The starting salary in this field is between 4,000 and 6,000, but if you become a specialist, then earnings are unlimited. In order to become a successful doctor, apart from education, the determination to serve the humanity, maintaining control during pressurizing situations, giving adept advice to patients regarding ailments and strong decision making power is also needed. At present in the country, there is only one doctor for around 2,027 people. Therefore, it will be justified to state, that future and career growth in this field is quite enlightened. Government is being quite responsive to public health. Doctors will be required wherever, new hospitals will be established, and this requirement can be fulfilled by you! Because in this way you can not only gain popularity, but can also serve your nation.
