The field of medicine is
associated with the cure of various ailments. One has to take
advice from a doctor, let it be cough or cold, or fever or a
headache. This is a primitive profession. People use to cure
diseases through leaves and herbs. With the passage of time,
these herbal medicines were replaced by chemically formulated
medicines. Likewise, new ways of treating diseases were
invented, which also led to the initiation of surgeries. In
this field, Socrates is called the Father of Medicine, and
Avicenna is known as the King of all Medical Experts. This
field not only cures illnesses, but it also involves public
health, prevention from diseases, surgery etc. At present, 36
institutions are imparting education of medicine in Pakistan,
out of which 22 are owned by government, whereas, the rest 14
are operated by the private sector. According to the Sind
Medical and Dental Council (SMDC), the figure of MBBS
graduates/ General Practitioners (GPs) by January 1, 2004, was
90,365, out of which 34,178 are females. Specialists in
various disciplines sum up to 15,959, which include 3,127
females.
The area of medicine is expanding so
drastically, that it is difficult to elucidate this field, in
a few words. After doing MBBS, one can specialize in any
particular area- paediatrics, gynaecology, ENT, cardiology,
neurology etc. In our country, there are many resources to
acquire advance education, and 10 public institutions are
offering post graduate studies. The starting salary in this
field is between 4,000 and 6,000, but if you become a
specialist, then earnings are unlimited. In order to become a
successful doctor, apart from education, the determination to
serve the humanity, maintaining control during pressurizing
situations, giving adept advice to patients regarding ailments
and strong decision making power is also needed. At present in
the country, there is only one doctor for around 2,027 people.
Therefore, it will be justified to state, that future and
career growth in this field is quite enlightened. Government
is being quite responsive to public health. Doctors will be
required wherever, new hospitals will be established, and this
requirement can be fulfilled by you! Because in this way you
can not only gain popularity, but can also serve your nation. |
