Since last two decades cooking has become
an art. Anybody can cook but there are very few who can cook
well. Food after cooking changes its taste, color, shape and
smell. Through experience one can learn how much time a food
takes to get cooked, and what is the method of cooking any
particular dish, and one can only learn this experience by
working with a chef.
Chef’s responsibility is not just to cook food but he has
to supervise other chefs, work on the presentation of food,
deal with the food suppliers and decide menu according to the
occasion. When you pass out from any institution after
acquiring education in cooking, you are only a cook but after
working in a restaurant or hotel with a chef, you learn many
different new methods of cooking, and gradually you learn
through experience and become a chef.
To become a chef of any hotel you’ve have to go through
various stages. The first stage is of Apprentice or a commas
chef. Next stage is of chef de party, where you not only have
to cook but to arrange parties as well. Third stage is of
Souse chef, who is the right man of head chef. He takes care
of the kitchen in the absence of head chef .The last and the
final stage is of Head Chef, whose main responsibilities are
to arrange the menu, hire or fire the staff, deal with the
suppliers of food and to keep a check on the kitchen
environment. A chef must have good managerial skills. He
should be able to work with a team. The most important quality
of a chef is that he should be able to work under stress. With
the rapid increase in tourism industry more hotels are
expected to open in Pakistan, which would give chance to many
people who are interested in joining this profession. |
