The world of medical science is quite vast.
In it, the profession of Pharmacy holds the same significance,
as the discipline of MBBS. Pharmacy is referred to, "the art
of preparing medicine." An MBBS doctor examines patients, and
diagnoses an ailment, but for the cure of this disease,
medicine is required, and these medicines are prepared by
pharmacists, and thus reach patients. At present, in all the
big provinces of Pakistan, the education of Pharmacy is being
imparted in eight different universities. Apart from these,
pharmacy can be learnt from some private universities as well.
According to an estimate, there are only 6,000 pharmacists,
for a 120 million population of Pakistan. However, in view of
public statistics, this figure should have been 60,000,
instead of 6,000.
In foreign countries, pharmacists hold
utmost importance in the field of medicine. In our country
however, there has not been satisfactory awareness in this
field till now. During the education of pharmacy, students are
made aware of the various procedures of preparing medicines,
till the process of marketing these. Currently, there are
around 520 small and big pharmaceutical companies operating
across Pakistan, out of which, approximately 40 are
multinationals. Most of these companies are located in Karachi
or Lahore. After completing the education of pharmacy, there
are three major areas where pharmacists can find employment
opportunities. These areas are Hospital Pharmacy, Industrial
Pharmacy, and Retail Pharmacy. Pharmacists have the highest
number of job opportunities available, in Industrial Pharmacy.
People working in the field of Are & D, do not only have to
research on, and develop various components and chemical
constituents, but also have to look after the quality of
medicines being produced. For the completion of these
procedures, there is a separate department, which is called
Production Quality Control, or Quality Assurance Department.
There is also a need of pharmacists, in the marketing
department of Pharmaceutical companies, where a pharmacist can
work in the capacity of a Medical Representative, or a Sales
Promotion Officer. Here, he is assigned with the task of
introducing and marketing various medicines. In Pakistan,
there is little scope in the field of Hospital Pharmacy,
except in some big hospitals. By Retail Pharmacy it is meant,
that if a pharmacist has sufficient funds available to open a
medical store, he can engage in his own business. There is a
high probability of success and revenue in this field. Apart
from this, he can also get a job as a Drug Inspector, in the
Health Department. According to Pakistan Pharmacy Act 1967,
every degree holder pharmacist must register with Pakistan
Pharmacy Council. And Provisional Pharmacy Council is
responsible for Registration. For registration, it is
mandatory for every pharmacist, to have at least 200 hours of
internship experience with a pharmaceutical company, or a
recognized hospital. Besides, a pharmacist can also get
employment in other parts of the country.
Candidates, who are interested in science
and research, can get success in the field of pharmacy. For
MBBS admission seekers, Pharmacy can be the best alternative. |
