Human are an essential part of any organization. Without them, any organization can not come into existence, irrespective of its size. Keeping in view the importance of people, the need for such a department was felt, which could not only hire suitable personnel for the company, but can also act like a liaison between the administration of the firm and the employees, because for the success and development of any company, mutual understanding between the management and staff is required. Keeping this need in view, a division by the name of Personnel Department began to function in organizations, which with the passage of time, came to be known as the Human Resource Department.

HRM is a very vast field. Basically, the responsibilities of this department can be divided into the following categories:

  • Recruitment and Selection

  • Training and Organizational Development

  • Salary and Compensation

  • Performance Appraisal

  • Employee Grievance Handling, and

  • Strategic HRM

Due to its importance and benefits, the scope of its responsibilities is widening. In Pakistan, this department was operating with its former name, but only in limited organization. With an increase in awareness, HRM department became part of various private and public companies. At present, this department is functioning in all national and multinational firms, service or manufacturing companies, or government/ semi government/ private organizations. In our country, the trend of making this department an integral part of the company is increasing. Thus, this can be expected, that within a short span of time, HR department will be seen operating in various companies, with a small or large set up.

In order to initiate a career in this field, basic qualities are given importance like, interpersonal skills, trustworthiness and psychological insight. Formal education in this discipline can be acquired from various private or public universities, where HRM can be taken up as a major subject, in some master degree programs. People acquainted with this subject, can get employment in various banks, industries, FMCGs, and other companies.

In this field, one can start as a Trainee or a Human Resource Officer (HRO), and may reach to the post of Director Human Resources. Initially, the salary may range between 6,000 and 8,000, which increases with the passage of time, and experience.
