Architecture, one of the
oldest professions on Earth, evolved when human beings started
a settled life, and endeavored to create a shelter for
protecting themselves from external forces of nature.
Architecture as a science has helped
develop and built an environment, conducive to the needs of
the society. It also facilitates the improvement of the
current living surroundings and habitat. This is an infinite
journey that is still continuing towards excellence.
By definition, architecture is a
combination of arts and applied sciences. Pakistan, being a
developing country of the southern hemisphere, falls in the
category of the nations constrained by socio-economic
disparities. For most of the issues, she has to devise
professional solutions of her own. Thus the importance of
appropriate architectural education is further underpinned.
Architecture is more than designing
buildings. Students who study architecture in college may
choose to go into many different careers such as Architectural
Journalist or Historian, Corporate or Landscape Architect,
Building Researcher or Inspector, Building Contractor,
Mechanical, Architectural, Civil or Industrial Engineer,
Marine Architect, Urban Planner, Art Director, Interior and
Set Designer, Real Estate Broker and so forth.
The needed renovation and rehabilitation of
old buildings, particularly in urban areas where space for new
buildings is becoming limited, is expected to provide many job
opportunities for architects. In addition, demographic trends
and changes in healthcare delivery are influencing the demand
for certain institutional structures, and should also provide
more jobs for architects in the future. For example, increases
in the school-age population have resulted in new school
construction.
Architects must be able to visually
communicate their ideas to clients. Artistic and drawing
ability is very helpful in doing this, but not essential. More
important are a visual orientation and the ability to
conceptualize and understand spatial relationships. Good
communication skills, the ability to work independently or as
part of a team, and creativity are important qualities for
anyone interested in becoming an architect.
After becoming licensed and gaining
experience, architects take on increasingly responsible
duties, eventually managing entire projects. In large firms,
architects may advance to supervisory or managerial positions.
Some architects become partners in established firms; others
set up their own practice.
So if as a kid you designed tree houses,
built sky scrapers out of Lego toys or were fascinated by
architectural wonders, architecture is the career for you. And
remember if you are considering architecture as a career then
