Ships sailing in deep
blue waters represent an entirely different world. Passengers
and items of trade are transported from one place to another,
through these ships. Ships can be categorized, according to
their nature of use, or construction like,
-
General cargo vessel
-
Container vessel
-
Passenger vessel
-
Oil tanker
-
Bulk carrier
-
Chemical tanker
-
Live stock carrier, and
-
RORO vessel
Whatever work is done on shores pertaining
to shipping, reflects the working style of a given company.
However, after leaving the shore that is on the ship, career
can be developed in two different directions.
-
Deck Cadets, and
-
Engineers Cadets.
Responsibilities of deck cadets include,
sailing the ship in the sea with complete security, keeping a
watch on sea tides, taking care of the cargo etc, whereas,
engineers have to keep functioning the engines of the ship and
other instruments and related equipment, control these
equipments, and take care of their maintenance. After some
time, deck cadets may become captains on the ship, and
engineer cadets may reach up to the position of chief
engineer.
75% of the earth comprises of water, and
according to a safe estimate, approximately 90% of entire
world trade is conducted through marine shipping.
Even in Pakistan, trade mainly takes place
through water channels. Currently in the country, there is
only one institution imparting education and training in
shipping, which is located in Karachi. The country possesses a
fleet of 17 ships of its own, whereas, private companies use
chartered party ships. Keeping this figure in view, it can be
stated that career prospects in this field are not as bright,
however, it can be hoped that with the construction of more
ports, growth opportunities are expected to augment. People
acquiring training in shipping, can also find employment
abroad. Initially, on publicly owned ships, salary ranges
between 6,000 and 7,000, along with other benefits and perks.
However, overseas, salary is around $ 400, with other
allowances as well.
People who are mentally active, are ready
to face dangers, and are self determined, can adopt this field
as a career, depending on their personal interest. Before
starting a career in this field, it is better that one
prepares himself psychologically, for limited job
opportunities. |
