Government’s responsibility is to curb crime and maintain peace in the country .To fulfill this responsibility, police force came into being. Any citizen can contact this department to protect themselves from criminal’s injustice, or any other social or economical insecurity. This department is divided into two parts:

  1. Operational

  2. Investigative

After the formation of Pakistan, the police department has been working with some minute changes under the British Rule of 1861.Changes are being brought into this rule according to the Ordinance 2001.There are 1371 police stations in the country.
Number of policemen in four provinces is as follows:
Balochistan 19,147
N.W.F.P 28,375
Sindh 1, 10,000
Punjab 1, 20, 722
Total number of police force in the country is 2, 78, 244, among which women are only 7000.Keeping in view the population and increasing rate of crime this number is not at all satisfying. Staff of a police station includes Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Assistant sub-inspector, Head Constable and Constable. Their number is decided according to the location of station, population of the area and requirement.
One can enter this field at three levels:
1. Constables
2. ASI
3. ASP
Constables are hired directly whereas for ASIs one has to give the exam of service commission at provincial level and for ASP, one has to go through the examination of CSS .In this department promotion is given on the basis of seniority. Being in this department one can also get a chance to go abroad for different missions. Not only this, one can also get a chance to be transferred to FIA and Traffic police department.
Pay scale of policemen at the level of Constable is BS.5 which increases with promotion and rank .Other fringe benefits include medical and home allowance etc. These benefits could also be increased with promotions. Pay scale of police force has increased as compared to the past. A policeman not only enjoys authority and power of uniform but he also has to face the challenges against crime. So, those who are brave and courageous and wants to serve their nation could make a career in this field.
