Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of Telephone is known as the founder of Telecommunication. His Invention has passed several stages of success. Today, everything from earth to space & from air to water is ruled by telecommunication. This field has played a very important role in turning the world into a global village. Telecommunication is a means of communication.

Fixed telephone lines, mobile phones, networking, online facilities, data connectivity and internet all are a part of telecommunication. Responsibilities of a telecom engineer could be different depending on his field. But a telecom engineer should have complete knowledge of software and hardware and with the help them he designs and implement telecommunication systems. Apart from this, a telecom engineer also provides technical networking.
Telecom engineering is basically apart of electrical engineering. Since past few years five different universities are providing education in telecom engineering. The demands of telecom engineers will increase as the government has decided to de-regularize telecom industry and licenses have also been issued to two cellular companies. There are 296 telecom engineers in Pakistan, which includes no female .Whereas, number of electronic engineers are 7121, among which 558 are females. A telecom engineer can work in the following companies:

  1. Cellular Company

  2. PTCL

  3. PTA

  4. Network & Internet service provider

  5. Wireless local loops providers.

Apart from these companies a telecom engineer can also work in forces. One can start a career in this field as a trainee engineer. Salary structure can be different in different organizations like in PTCL telecom engineer’s starting salary is 8000-10000/- where one’s designations starts from assistant divisional engineer and it reaches the post of a general manager or director. In cellular companies, one starts with the post of an assistant engineer which reaches to the post of a director and initially one earns from 15,000-20,000/-. In Network providers, one starts from a technical support which reaches the post of a chief technology officer, initially one earns 10,000/-.
